Here is the process to install Ubuntu LTS 8.04 codename “Hardy Heron” on your computer.

First you’ll have to burn the CD you can find the iso to download here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Then you’ll have to burn the ISO, you can use CD Burner XP wich is a very good FREE Cd burner software.

Do not burn it as a normal file, after choosing Create Data CD/DVD.

Click on File/Burn Disc from ISO file…

Select your ISO File and click on Burn Disc.

After the CD is burned restart your computer, it should boot on the CD and guide you to this window where you can choose your language:

It is possible to try Ubuntu without any changes on your computer easily by selecting “Try Ubuntu without change on your computer”.

We will install Ubuntu so, select “Install Ubuntu”:

Let it loads the kernel, it can take several minutes depending on your computer’s performance:

It is still loading applications

Now the wallpaper appears showing you the beautiful Hardy Heron!

And the first window appears asking you for the default language you want install on the computer. It can be changed later and you can have several installed at the same time for public computer or like in my family where I prefer soft in English and my sister in French.

Choose the city where you live for the Time Zone, they changed this tool on the map, I think they shouldn’t have…. Select with the roll down button, it’s easier. And then click on “Forward”.

Then Choose your country and your keyboard configuration, if you’re not sure you can type on the bottom-left box to try. And then click “Forward”.

Then wait for the partitioner to load.

You can let Ubuntu choose how to install it, be careful of your existing partition and windows in particulary if you don’t want to erase it. With the new graphical tool it’s easy to see what you do.

If you want to install Ubuntu Linux on all of your had drive select the first option. If you want to do it more specificaly choose manual.

Then enter you name, your login, your password twice for verification and the name of the computer.

After you can see all the settings you chose, after review click on “Install”.

And now the system is being install.

The installation is over, click on “Reboot Now”.

Remove the CD and press enter.

First loading of Ubuntu.

Enter the username you put before and the password.

And now you can play with your brand new Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron

Nous français pouvons dés a présent achetés des PC de grands constructeur embarquant une distribution Linux.

Une présentation identique a celle que l’on peut retrouver sur le site de Dell USA, même le manque de pub pour l’offre est présente.
Si l’on choisit un PC Normalement, on doit sélectionner “Sélectionnez avec Windows Vista”.

Et sur la page d’Ubuntu-Dell on retrouve un lien pour acheter des PC équipés de WIndows.

Et top du top!!!! le lien vers les PC équipés d’Ubuntu ne fonctionne pas.

Enfin il y a encore du chemin a faire mais il faut laisser le tempset c’est sur la bonne voie avec Lenevo-Suse.

Ça y est après les US, à partir d’aujourd’hui Dell propose à la vente des PC avec Ubuntu d’installé dessus pour la France, le Royaume-Uni et l’Allemagne.

La page n’est pour l’instant pas mise à jour sur le site de Dell.

Deux modèles sont pour l’instant en vente: les Inspiron 6400N et 530N
En espérant que les problèmes de délais de livraison pour Dell Europe ne vont pas empirer.

Après avoir installé Beryl, lorsque vous ouvrez une nouvelle fenêtre, il se peut qu’elle apparaisse toute noir ce qui est assez énervant.
Voici deux petites étapes pour en venir a bout:

1) Pour cela vous devez installer Beryl Manager:
sudo apt-get install beryl-manager

(Cette ligne peut changer suivant votre gestionnaire de paquet: rpm, yast,..)

2) Click-droit sur l’icone Beryl dans la barre
Options Avancées / Type de rendu /Copy

Et cela marche parfaitement.
Cela peut affecter les performances, mais aucun différence notable avec une 6600GT, excepté qu’il n’y a plus d’écran noir.

Ca y est, la nouvelle alpha d’Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 appelée Tribe3 vient d’être mise à disposition par Canonical.
La version finale sera disponible au mois d’octobre 2007.

After installing Beryl, when you open a new window, sometimes it appears all black, which is very frustrating.
Here it’s two easy steps on how to deal with this bug with NVidia graphic cards.

1) To handle this, you must install beryl manager
sudo apt-get install beryl-manager

(this line is for Ubuntu, it can change depending your distro and your package manager)

2) Right-click on the beryl-manager tray icon
Advanced Beryl Options/ Rendering Path / Copy

And it works perfectly.
It can affect performances, but with a NVidia 6600GT, no differences, except there is no more Black Screen

Following the blog “How to rip the audio from a DVD with Ubuntu Linux” I had to convert my mp3 files in ogg.

MP3 is a proprietary format, you’re “supposed” to pay a fee when you want your player to read it. You can read a lot more about this problem in Wikipedia.

Ogg Vorbis is an open source format. Sadly it is not as popular, but there is portable audio player, like the Samsung YP-K5J who can read ogg and you can read them on your computer.

Convert MP3 in OGG Vorbis

First we will install a little script made by Nathan Walp: mp32ogg

sudo apt-get install mp32ogg

It’s done, now to convert a file, open a terminal and do:

mp32ogg --quality=10 --delete --rename=%t /home/Musiques/file.mp3

Warning: it will delete the original file!! (remove “–delete” if you don’t want).

Great news last week, when canonical published the new alpha release of Ubuntu Gutsy.

The bcm43xx drivers will be in the restricted manager repositories.
It means no more ndiswrapper, windows drivers,…
We’ll have to wait October 18th.
